Grey Havens

The Grey Havens, known in the Elvish tongue as Mithlond, are the chief haven of the Elves in Middle-earth during the closing centuries of the Third Age. Situated on the shores of the Gulf of Lune in the western land of Lindon, the Havens are the last port from which the Elven-ships set sail into the Uttermost West, bound for the Undying Lands. They are the domain of Círdan the Shipwright, the oldest and most venerable of the Elves remaining in Middle-earth, who has dwelt there since the First Age and who oversees the building and departure of the white ships that carry his kindred over the Sea.

Role as the Last Haven

The Grey Havens are the final threshold between Middle-earth and the West. Throughout the Third Age, they serve as the primary point of embarkation for the Elves, who depart in increasing numbers as the power of the Elven-rings fades and the Dominion of Men begins. The Havens are not merely a port but a place of profound significance, representing the end of the Elvish age in Middle-earth. It is from Mithlond that the last of the High Elves, including the Keepers of the Three Rings, take ship. The Havens are also the destination of the Ring-bearers, Frodo Baggins and Bilbo Baggins, who are granted passage into the West to find healing for their wounds and weariness.

The Departure of the Ring-bearers

The most pivotal event associated with the Grey Havens occurs at the very end of the Third Age. In the autumn of S.R. 1421, Frodo and Bilbo, accompanied by Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel, ride to the Havens. There they find a white ship prepared by Círdan, and Gandalf, now openly bearing Narya the Red Ring, boards with them. The ship sails out into the long firth of Lune and passes into the High Sea, bound for the West. This departure marks the definitive end of the Third Age and the beginning of the Fourth Age, the age of Men. For Samwise Gamgee, who remains behind, the sight of the ship disappearing into the grey sea is a moment of profound sorrow and finality, though he takes comfort in the friends who ride home with him.

Círdan the Shipwright and the Havens' Guardianship

Círdan, the Lord of the Grey Havens, is a figure of immense age and wisdom. He is the keeper of the Third Ring, Narya, until he passes it to Gandalf upon the Wizard's arrival in Middle-earth, recognizing Gandalf's true nature and the burdens he will bear. Círdan's role is not merely that of a shipwright but of a guardian of the last road to the West. He and his folk maintain the Havens and build the ships that carry the Elves into the Uttermost West. The Havens themselves are described as a place of great beauty and quiet, with a long firth and a quay where the white ships lie at anchor, waiting for the final voyage.

The Havens in the Wider War

Though the Grey Havens are a place of peace and departure, they are not untouched by the shadow of the War of the Ring. During the Council of Elrond, Galdor, an Elf from the Grey Havens, is present as a messenger from Círdan, bringing news of the wider world and the movements of the Enemy. The Havens are also a strategic point, as the forces of Sauron, if they had conquered Gondor, might have marched along the coasts to assail the White Towers and the Havens themselves, cutting off the last escape of the Elves. The survival of the West, therefore, is directly tied to the safety of this final haven.
